Noughties waist belts are back

Here’s how to style them for 2019

There were many questionable markers of noughties fashion – waistcoats, gypsy skirts, skinny scarves, trucker hats, to name but a few (admit it; you owned and loved at least one of those items). But one of the most defining accessorises of that fashion decade was the wide chunky belt, worn either on the hips or cinching the waist. And now, they’re back.

That’s right, the nostalgic noughties accessory has had a modern makeover and, believe it or not, can instantly update your wardrobe for 2019.

To avoid entirely regressing to 2001, opt for a simple style and make sure to pair with an outfit that’s not too fussy. Here are three ways to make it work for you:

1. Take it to the office

Waist belts work well with more formal attire, which makes them great for updating your office wear. If you want to add more of an edge, go for a thicker corset-style belt to accentuate your waist. Pair with a delicate dress and boots to toughen up your look or, for a softer approach, add a pretty pastel belt to a ladylike suit like Keira Knightley in Chanel.

2. Winter definition

To incorporate this trend into your everyday wardrobe, take style cues from Elsa Hosk. Use a waist belt to add definition to big bulky winter coats; you’ll still be cosy and warm, but it won’t look as though your waist has been lost in swathes of fabric.

3. The new trench

Try swapping your raincoat’s existing tie-up belt for something more chunky – this look from the Marc Jacobs spring/summer 2019 collection serves as perfect inspiration.
